Recently, I've read an article named Why Chinese Children Smile Less Than American Children, written by Liu Yong, a famous American Chinese writer in Taiwan. It mentions a statistic to be concerned is what an American psychologist Linda Kamla said on the 28th international psychology meeting in 2007: A three-year-old Chinese child smiles 55.6% less than an American child at the same age. Happiness comes from creativity. Her opinion comes from records, comparisions and analyses to more than forty pairs of Chinese and American children's smile and deep researches to the differences in psychology and characteristic of children in both countries. She thinks the reason why Chinese children smiles little has a tight connection with the case that parents have an overexpectation on children and they control too much of their kids' life, which decrease children's studying and self-care ability. It is said that Chinese children are embraced to grow up, while American children are crawling to grow. It is really a visual description. I beleive that the main reason is that because of the differences in national conditions, there are lots of different views in educationg children and the interaction between parents and children, and these are all affected by traditional thought. For instance, American parents are used to praise and encourage their kids to let them face difficulties, maybe even fail. However, Chinese parents always worry about the frustration or unfair their children experienced. American parents use praise and encouragement to help children be brave to try. Childhood with dreams is joyful. American who are used to "Do It Yourself" since they are young respect children's opinion and they give children advice though communication. On the contrary, Chinese parents would make decisions for their children and help their children skip difficulties with the thought of "I have walked across more bridges than the roads my children have walked on". Experts said that simple lines and bright color design are adequate for children's room. I often observe collegues and friends and how they treat their children in life. And I've discovered that their respection to children and the inspiration when children are young truly are reasons which make children confident and happy. An American TV station has held an interesting activity which offered a small budget for students who are going to colleges before summer vacation ended. It let them use their creativiy to plan their living cost and design the decorations of their new dorms within the budget, in order to train them to use money well and to conceive and plan their new life. When the results were published, a lot of fancy ideas won applauds from people. In fact, most American parents have been training their children to make their own decisions since children are young. In markets, I often see little kids sitting in baby carriages, strong-mindedly nodding or shaking their heads or picking up their favors with small fat hands when their parents put a product in front of them. That look is really cute! Or when we only see from one thing that how children treat their own rooms, we can find lots of interesting phenomena: Asian parents usually clean the rooms for their children, while American children would do it on their own. If you ever had a chance to visit American children's rooms, it would also be an interesting "discovery tour". It's because you would see various dream kindoms created by thoughts of different children with different charactors, different hobbies and different talents. Children put their favorate collections together. It is researched that parents can know more about their children's attitudes though the indoors color their children choose. According to researches of children psychology, children who like yellow are more dependent; children who prefer green and blue are more gentle and clam; children who like orange and red are more outgoing and optimistic with abundant of emotion; and children who like pink and purple are more tolerant and submissive, and they are also not narrow minded. Childhood with dreams is happy, and can turn dream into reality, also can improve children's confidence. Perhaps this is the reason why American children always put smiles on their face.
