I always think of a plan before getting down to my works, since I can study in a more organized and effective way. With a plan, I also work with a sense of settlement. I want to mention, however, that I don't make too specific plans or with too much details. Planning shouldn't interfere with creativity and imagination. Thus, I often make sure I provide spaces for those inspirations.
