“The Crucible” s based on historical people and real events; it is set in a theocratic society in 1692. In 1692 Salem, everything was associated with God. Witchcraft was the main subject throughout the play. People were afraid of witchcraft, and they suspected their neighbors. Fear of the devil allowed the witch trials to go on, and people committed absurd and heinous crimes during this period.
“The Crucible” is a tragic allegory. What really impressed me were the characters in the play. Most of the characters in “The Crucible” are lying – if not to other people, then to themselves. Abigail Williams is the main character in the play. She is a wily, malevolent girl and also a good liar. What impressed me most is her unique character. Although she is the bad girl in the play, what I found in her character is real human nature. She contrived everything to cheat people. She was looking out for herself and took whatever actions necessary to save herself. Although I entirely condemn her action, I really enjoyed the ideas in this tragic play.
The word “crucible” means ordeal. This play gave people a feeling of everyone’s ugly and even diabolical side, but it is real. I read the book first and then saw the play. What I have to say is that the characters in the production are so poetic. A lot of my classmates, however, felt confused about them, because many actors played more than one character in the play. The characters were still portrayed very excellently. Their voices were filled with passion and their expressions were very realistic. I saw the tears in their eyes. The stage, the lights, and the costumes, everything, gave me an unforgettable impression. “The Crucible” is a play that tells us that peoples’ lives in theocratic societies can be destroyed by that theocracy. Even though I am not in that historic time, this production gave me a spirit shock because now I understand the vivid characters’ struggle in the theocratic society.
