The question has to be answered onindividual basis.It iscommonly perceived that part-time employment has detrimental effects onstudents’ education attainment.However,there are also studies that suggeststhere is only minimal or casual effect on the educational attainment of workingstudents.It however doe not always has detrimental effects on student’s academicefforts.If thestudent has certain maturity who can manage his/her time properly,has excellent organisation skills and the ability to perform under pressure andto cope and deal with unforeseeable.Also the student’s ability to balancebetween studies and working is essential to the outcome.Neither worknor studying willever come to a halt while the student navigates thedemands they each place on them.In all likelihood,the student will struggle to keep up withthe requirements of both (and possibly be told by people in both places that he/she is compromisingthe quality of each).This tug of war can take many forms,from schedule conflictsduring crunch times to an accumulation of tasks that become difficult tobalance.For example,astudent may have to stay up lateseveral consecutive nights in order to finish a school assignment by a deadlinethat just happens to coincide with the day he/she needs to work.Even if thestudent has a fairamount of influence over his/herwork schedule,you can’t always control everything.More often,it isn’t the big events at work or school that add up,but rather the cumulative effect of many smaller responsibilities that makesfull-time studying and part-time work so challenging.It can be downright difficult to keep track of all the work-related tasks whilealso digesting the intricacies of readings and completing assignments forseveral different subjects atschool.Findingthe mental stamina to keep it all together can be overwhelming at times,especiallywhen these demands are added to the student’s already busy everyday life.The flexibility of the employer and study program are critical factors in the student’s abilityto balance the two endeavours.One thing is certain that workingpart-time whilst studying is not everyone’s cup of tea.It needs to beassessed carefully based on individual circumstances and financial stress.Working part-time whilst studying should not beencouraged nor discouraged.
